Excerpt from Templi Carmina: Songs of the Temple, or Bridgewater Collection of Sacred Music
The Counter, or Alto, is designed for boys, or the lowest female voices, or the highest voices of men.
This is the natural order in which the parts should stand, but it has been found convenient to place the Treble next to the Base to accomodate organists and other performers on keyed instruments, and the Tenor takes its place at the top. This is the order in this work.
